okay, so here's 3 pics two shots with the Samsung Galaxy mini 8/meg phone one in normal portrait orientation and one completely upside down. And another comparo pic taken with the D50 and it's pop up flash. Okay, no one would shoot something a foot away from a wall and a foot away from their subject... or would they?

You're right; no one would make a portrait with the wall that close unless the had secondary flash from the side as well as bounce lighting. I think a better experiment would be to shoot a vase or whatever from a reasonable portrait distance say 8 feet (rule of thumb is 6 - 8 ft) with the phone and the Nikon and compare. If I have time and remember, I'll try and do one as well.

I did a 'selfie' that would bring tears to your eyes. I'd post it for the forum but not until we get some others preceding me.. (I'm so shy)

Image to left without flash and to right with flash. Both taken with HTC 8x Windows phone. About all this shows is that the flash from the phone is reasonably diffused. I'm pleased with its output overall. Forgot to do the Nikon pic with flash. DRAT!

Now that you mention it, I see what you mean about "cold" output in the flash. The rig above reminds me of my early slide-shooting days. When I had my Minolta X700 I bought Vivitar flash with a small umbrella that attached to the flash. I even had a slave unit. The results were actually quite pleasant... so much so that my sister asked me to shoot her daughter's (my niece) wedding. It turned out reasonably well but I think I lost about 50 pounds through sweating and worrying. NEVER AGAIN! I have great respect for those who cart around this kind of equipment and KNOW what they are doing. I'm not there and I never want to be there again.

One thing Lin noticed right off was the almost 3D effect of the holly on the table. The table has a glass top with holy beneath on a red plastic covering. The next thing I noticed is a lack of consistency. Yesterday the scene was cold. These appear warm and yet both settings had incandescent lighting. Very odd.

yes I noticed the 3D effect right after reading what Lin had said about it. That bit of off camera lighting does give depth to the photo.... Camera mounted flash is so guilty of producing 'flat' looking pictures. It was kinda odd to see my feet on someone else's screen. Did you hear about how satellite imaging was always done later or earlier in the day and never at high noon? Because at high noon there would be no shadow cast by the subjects on the ground and the sense of height(or depth) was missing. Actually knowing the time of day they could accurately determine he height of a missile or tower or what have you by looking at the length of the shadow.

The satellite imaging information was very interesting. It makes sense but I had no idea that this is what was done.
Yes, your feet stuck in my face is a bit odd but like many of your images... creative.
Aside: think tennis analogy... think serving the ball and no returns... now think the current situation. Do you sense it, Charlie?

That's my take as well. Wonder why? Wonder why.... I dunno. Reading the first hellos and how do you do's and what not... it sounded like the peeps were gonna support this forum. Another frustrating thing is we get one comment or response for every 10, 20 or even 30 visits to a thread. What's up with that?

I'm confused but the balls won't be served much longer I'm afraid.
