James said we should keep focus on the nearest eye when doing portraits. Here is the 100% best way of guaranteeing that. This man is a councilor for troubled youth and young adults... yikes, that's a job that you really have to be cut out for. (I'd expect) The cloudy sky over Lake Simcoe and looking into the setting sun was a good recipe for a portrait. IMO. The little D50 and 35/1.8 did a nice job of getting some detail but I did crop into the pic to get that detail to show up. A free program called Photo Editor did a decent job of removing fill-flash glare. original framing

Nice one Charlie, The close-up combined with the BW gives it a sculpted look, like one of the faces on Mt. Rushmore, or the old man on the mountain in New Hampshire.

The first image puts me in mind of a Karsh portrait. Really nice shot.

The first image puts me in mind of a Karsh portrait. Really nice shot. hey James, after reading your comment (actually, the thought came to me too) I went to Google again. you gotta check out this official site! In the gallery of his portraits, Karsh comments on each photograph shown. One, it's very interesting from a historical point of view and two, he gives details about how the pics where taken. www.karsh.org/#Many of his portraits had that rim lighting affect going on... just as in this pic of my friend who was looking to wards the sunset. That and the pure profile look is very reminiscent of many of Karsh's portraits. Somehow he convinced his subjects with large noses to let him shoot them in profile.

That's a great site. I reread the story of the Churchill portrait. Can't imagine having the guts to do what Karsh did. LOL
Yeah... your portrait really does have that Karsh look to it.

Could be. And by the way... this portrait just wouldn't have the same impact if it were in color. Why is that? Is it to do with the expression on the subject's face?
