this is from a camera chum's Nikon D7000 using my 85/1.8 lens... shot as it was set up by him in monochrome. This fellow here is an electrician and a good friend of mine. I was his best man when he got married. He has a great sense of humor.
this pic was cropped so that maybe about a 1/4 of the original remains here as posted. Still the 16 meg sensor captures pretty impressive detail, no? The photo was shot in a living room and added light was bounced from the ceiling with a little sb600 flashgun.
hands can add something to a portrait,no?...here this guy's stubby fingers hint that he's a workman. Camera Maker: NIKON CORPORATION Camera Model: NIKON D7000 Image Date: 2013-12-25 22:38:34 +0000 Focal Length: 85.0mm (35mm equivalent: 127mm) Aperture: f/3.2 Exposure Time: 0.017 s (1/60) ISO equiv: 800 Exposure Bias: none Metering Mode: Center Weight Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto) White Balance: Manual Flash Fired: Yes (Auto, return light detected) Orientation: Normal Color Space: sRGB Software: Adobe Photoshop Elements 11.0 Windows

Lots of positive attitude coming through - I like it. I did a quick cropping off the hand, yes it definitely contributes to the picture. (Susan Boyle's team should take a lesson on how to do a hand close to the face).

(Susan Boyle's team should take a lesson on how to do a hand close to the face). oh, I should have said that I tried to get my friend here to squinch like in Joan's great link to Peter Hurley's teaching about 'squinching' the eyes. Hey, my friend is an electrician after all and not a professional model he did pretty good squinching after a one minute lesson from me...(and I'm not Peter Hurley) the famous photographer Karsh and Rembrandt both used the hands in their work... we should too, maybe? I know Susan Boyle from the T.V. talent show... what a surprise to everyone. Looks can deceive eh? but how come her team should include her hand? Like is there something in particular that we don't know about Ms. Boyle that including her hand might suggest? you know what? I just went and did a quick Google for Susan Boyle and found this video of her singing. my my has she ever matured in front of the camera! (by the way this was filmed in Black and White with cool lighting on Ms. Boyle... well worth the listen/look) Susan Boyle singing

There is a photo of her hand close to her face, but it has a very irritating effect on me.

It's most probably just me, but I don't like it. I am a fan.

I am a fan. good call Riana... it looks so 'posed' eh? and kinda like she's hard'a hearing too... maybe a little spot darkening on her hand would have changed the whole look ... but just generally, the way the hand is up there man'o man it makes it look like she's got quite the mitt there.
